Matka: The Basis
Varun Tej who is known for playing with a variety of genres, has recently had a string of box office busts with films including Operation Valentine, Gandeevadhari Arjuna, and Ghani. His goal is to regain his box office success with the film “Matka” which is based on the notorious life of gambler Ratan Khatri. Is this film capable of reviving his career? How well this gambling drama does at the movie office is a matter of time.
Overview of the Story
Ratan Khatri who was notorious for operating the Matka gambling scam, served as the inspiration for Matka. Vasu (played by Varun Tej) finds it difficult to get employment after serving time in prison and eventually accepts a menial (labour) job. Sujata (Meenakshi Chaudhary), Nani Babu (Kishore), Sofia (Nora Fatehi), Padma (Saloni Aswani), Appala Reddy (Ajay Ghosh), Sahu (Naveen Chandra) and Narayan Murthy (P. Ravi Shankar) are just a few of the personalities whose lives are interwoven with Vasu’s life.
Cast Performance
- Varun Tej:
Varun does a great job as the lead and shows commitment to the part, but his change into an elderly gangster seems erratic. His portrayal of youth occasionally conflicts with the character’s requirements, leaving his metamorphosis unfinished. Nonetheless, it is noteworthy that he made an effort to adopt the character’s physical attributes and demeanor. - Meenakshi Chaudhary:
Meenakshi’s character depth and on-screen presence are lacking which are making her role seem underdeveloped. Her performance is competent but it doesn’t make an impression. - Nora Fatehi:
One of the highlights of the film is unique beauty of Nora. Her vivacious performance and rapport with Varun provide the narrative much-needed vitality. - Supporting Cast:
One-dimensional character writing detracts from the good performances of actors like Ajay Ghosh and Naveen Chandra.
Technical Features
- Direction & Screenplay:
The film’s promise as an engaging criminal drama is dashed because of its cliched plot and poor execution. Story twists are cliche and narrative is repeatitive, thus writing lacks depth and originality. - Music and Cinematography:
Although the cinematography seems visually beautiful, it is unable to cover-up for the weak plot and G.V. Prakash Kumar’s background soundtrack seems unmemorable. - Editing:
There was room for tighter editing. The movie drags in places because of a number of pointless scenes which seems to slow down the action.
Advantages
Varun Tej’s attempt to make the major part come to life.
Components from the Matka gambling scene and a retro style.
The magnetic presence of Nora Fatehi.
Limitations
Poor background score.
Uninspired execution and an antiquated plot.
Insufficient narrative or emotional depth.
The Final Judgment
Matka is a chance lost. Even though the film was inspired by the fascinating life of Ratan Khatri, it fails because of its conventional style and lack of compelling storytelling. Although Varun Tej deserves praise for his dedication to the role, it is insufficient to keep the film afloat. This might have been a powerful cinematic experience with a sharper writing, more interesting direction, and more fascinating character arcs.
Rating: An ordinary, formulaic performer who finds it difficult to surpass mediocrity.
